«Hässlichkeit» von Moshtari Hilal

Reading & Talk

In her book "Hässlichkeit" artist and curator Moshtari Hilal explores the effects of beauty ideals on racialized people. She herself experienced self-doubt as a child due to discrimination because of her dark arm hair and distinctive facial features. For such people, societal beauty norms lead to self-hatred and a desire for change. Hilal calls for a system without exclusion and scarcity to overcome the fear of ugliness.
